Creating My Village: Mentorship in Uncertain Times

Lately, I have been reflecting on what it truly means to build resilience in times of uncertainty. The answer that keeps surfacing is community. More specifically, the mentors who pour into us, challenge us, guide us, and remind us of who we are.

Types of Mentors

I have built a village of mentors, each serving a unique role in my growth:

  • A formal mentor from a leadership program who helped structure my path.
  • A mentor who pulled no punches and challenged me with tough love.
  • A moral-compass mentor who reminds me to stay purpose-driven.
  • A transition mentor I sought out strategically to help guide a career move.

In moments like these, it becomes clear how essential it is to maintain these relationships, not just because we need something, but because we value their presence in our lives.

Mentorship is not a one-way street. Our mentors need care, too. Power and wisdom do not make someone immune to burnout, self-doubt, or loneliness. A strong community only thrives when its members contribute with intention and care.

Common mentorship pitfalls

If you do not have a mentor, keep these in mind:

  • Do not limit yourself to mentors in your immediate office.
  • Do not select based solely on title or status.
  • Be intentional and know what you want to learn or develop.
  • Seek out someone with a different background or perspective.

Check in with your mentors

If you do have mentors, check in. Whether you are thriving or just holding on, a simple message can go a long way. Relationships flourish through reciprocity, not just need.

So, here is your reminder: maintain your village. In this season, may we all offer and receive the kind of care that builds lasting connection.

Key takeaway

Build a diverse village of mentors, choose them on purpose, and check in before you need something.
